India and EU Foster Sustainable Ship Recycling Cooperation
India and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in sustainable ship recycling, with both sides confident over facilitating the inclusion of Indian ship recycling facilities under the European Union Ship Recycling Regulation (EUSRR).
During discussions between Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and European Commissioner Jessika Roswall, the ongoing audit and compliance process for Indian shipyards was reviewed. Over 30 Indian ship recycling yards applied for EU recognition, with six currently in the compliance process. Three facilities have successfully completed the required compliance procedures.
The inclusion of Indian ship recycling facilities in the EU framework reflects India's growing influence in international maritime trade and compliance with global sustainability standards.
