Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the 3rd India-Australia Annual Summit in Melbourne on 9 July 2026. The summit matters because it combines trade, security, technology, and people-to-people ties in one bilateral framework, and because India and Australia used it to push both strategic and economic cooperation.
What happened
The summit was hosted by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese MP at Government House. Prime Minister Modi was received with a ceremonial welcome. The two leaders held one-on-one talks, followed by delegation-level discussions.
They reviewed the progress made under the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has completed six years. They also reaffirmed an early finalisation of an ambitious, balanced, and mutually beneficial Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA).
Key areas of cooperation
The leaders discussed cooperation in trade and investment, defence and security, critical minerals, cyber and emerging technologies, space, civil nuclear, clean energy, education, and people-to-people ties. This shows that the relationship is no longer limited to defence or diaspora links; it now covers supply chains, technology, and energy transition as well.
