What happened

Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda reviewed the progress of AIIMS Bibinagar in Bibinagar, Hyderabad on 9 July 2026. The institute was established by the Government of India under Phase-VII of PMSSY in 2019, and the project commenced in June 2022 at a cost of ₹1,110.55 crore.

Background and earlier position

The central government has used PMSSY to create and upgrade tertiary care institutions, especially the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The article notes that India had only one AIIMS till the end of the 20th century, then six additional AIIMS were established during the tenure of former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Since then, 16 new AIIMS have been added, taking the total to 23 institutions across the country.

The release also places AIIMS Bibinagar within a wider health-system expansion. The government says it has built a uniform and integrated healthcare framework by strengthening tertiary institutions while also expanding secondary and primary healthcare. It claims the country now has 1.85 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs serving nearly 1.5 billion people, and that medical colleges have increased from 387 in 2014 to 820 at present.
