What happened: knowledge paper launch on AI in MedTech

Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers and Health and Family Welfare, Shri J. P. Nadda, released the knowledge paper “AI in MedTech: Revolutionizing Healthcare Through Artificial Intelligence” at the 9th Edition of India Medical Device 2026 in New Delhi (Vigyan Bhawan). The event was organised by the Department of Pharmaceuticals in association with FICCI. The paper was jointly developed by Praxis Global Alliance in association with FICCI, and it presents action priorities for accelerating responsible AI adoption in healthcare.

Background and earlier position: India’s foundations and the pilot-to-scale gap

The knowledge paper highlights the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across healthcare, including diagnostics, clinical decision support, operational efficiency, and medical device innovation. It notes that India has built important foundational programmes and policy directions, including Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), IndiaAI Mission, SAHI, BODH, and the National Medical Devices Policy, 2023. Even with these building blocks, the paper points out a key bottleneck: moving AI solutions from successful pilots to large-scale clinical adoption remains a major challenge.

The knowledge paper presents five priorities for accelerating AI-enabled MedTech adoption in India. It also identifies three ecosystem gaps that must be addressed to shift from pilot projects to routine clinical adoption:
