What happened
The Aadhaar App has crossed 40 million downloads, according to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The release presents the app as a digital-first platform for Aadhaar-related services that can be used without visiting an Aadhaar centre for several routine tasks.
The app is being used for address updates, mobile number updates, email updates, biometric lock and unlock, and e-Aadhaar download. The government release also says the app is designed to help Aadhaar number holders show, share, and verify identity in a privacy-first format.
UPSC may use the Aadhaar App to ask how digital identity platforms improve access to public services while also raising questions of authentication, data security, consent, and exclusion. The issue links governance delivery with privacy safeguards and the broader Digital India mission.
