What happened
The Supreme Court of India has constituted a High-Powered Committee (HPC) to examine matters related to the Aravalli Hills and Ranges and ancillary issues. The committee has been asked to submit a comprehensive report to the Supreme Court before 31 August 2026.
The committee has invited representations, suggestions and inputs from stakeholders in the States of NCT of Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat, along with environmentalists, conservationists, not-for-profit organisations, mining lease holders, project proponents, villagers, farmers, mine workers, local communities and other interested persons or entities with a legitimate interest in the issues under examination.
Background and earlier position
The Aravalli range is an ecologically sensitive mountain system spread across multiple States. It is linked to biodiversity, groundwater recharge, soil conservation and regional environmental stability. The present Supreme Court process places the issue within judicial scrutiny over land use, mining activity and ecological protection.
