What happened
The Ministry of Culture announced the Museum Grant Scheme to provide financial assistance for setting up new museums, developing existing museums, digitising museum collections, creating virtual museums, and training museum professionals.
Museum categories and eligibility
The scheme classifies museums into three categories with category-specific eligibility conditions. Category I focuses on State/UT capital location, reputation and collection quality, and a footfall threshold. Category III focuses on institutional existence, governance rules, possession of significant collections, sustainability, capacity, non-profit functioning, and land ownership/access.
