What happened: JJM extension, Jal Arpan, and community-managed water systems
The Ministry of Jal Shakti announced measures to extend the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal, strengthen community participation through Jal Arpan, and support long-term rural water operations through a standardized handbook on community management of piped systems.
JJM extension up to December 2028 (JJM 2.0) with higher financing
In March 2026, the Union Cabinet approved extension of the JJM period up to December 2028. The approved changes include an enhanced total outlay and a restructured implementation approach focused on structural reforms in the rural drinking water supply sector under JJM 2.0.
