What happened

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has undertaken preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to address traffic congestion at the Sarai Kale Khan Loop on the DND–Sohna section of NH-148NA. NHAI describes the Sarai Kale Khan Loop as a critical junction in Delhi’s National Capital Region (NCR) and an important node for traffic merging from Ashram, Noida, and Sarai Kale Khan. NHAI states that the DPR will assess long-term traffic management and engineering solutions for decongesting the interchange.

Background and earlier position

The Sarai Kale Khan Loop functions as a strategic convergence point for traffic coming from Ashram, Noida, and Sarai Kale Khan. NHAI highlights that the corridor connection DND–Sohna is expected to be commissioned, which is expected to increase traffic volumes at this interchange. NHAI positions the DPR preparation as an early planning step so that congestion at a “busiest” transport node can be handled with engineering interventions before demand rises further.

What changed now

NHAI has started DPR preparation specifically aimed at the Sarai Kale Khan Loop. NHAI’s stated DPR scope includes: Evaluating infrastructure interventions to enhance corridor capacity and improve traffic circulation at the interchange.Reducing travel time and improving road safety through corridor-level improvements.Ensuring that the operational benefits of the DND–Sohna corridor are fully realised after commissioning by enabling seamless connectivity at the interchange. In effect, NHAI has shifted from identifying the interchange as a congestion point to producing a buildable planning document (DPR) that can guide traffic decongestion and engineering execution.
