What happened under NAPS-2 (MSDE apprenticeship promotion)
The Government of India, through the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), continues apprenticeship promotion under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS). MSDE launched NAPS in August 2016. From 2022-23, the scheme continues as NAPS-2. The scheme’s focus remains apprenticeship training in actual work environments and improved industry participation, including technology companies.
MSDE delivers apprenticeship training in participating establishments using training facilities available with those establishments. Apprenticeship training under NAPS-2 is organised under the Apprentices Act, 1961 (the legal framework for apprenticeship).
Background and earlier position
NAPS began in August 2016 to promote apprenticeship training and increase apprentices’ engagement across India. The scheme continues from 2022-23 as NAPS-2, keeping workplace-based training as a core feature.
