What happened: NHRC suo motu cognizance and notice to Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognizance of allegations that students of Classes VI to VIII at a government school in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh were not served mid-day meals for the last two years.
NHRC’s notice was linked to reported findings and allegations mentioned in the media report:
Students of Classes VI to VIII reportedly wrote to the District Magistrate about their grievances.Reportedly, an inquiry revealed false records maintained to show that mid-day meals were regularly served to 200 students.The media report dated 27 August 2026 alleged irregularities and alleged misappropriation involving nearly Rs. 14 lakh.Reportedly, the allegations included underpayment of cooks and misuse of Pradhan Mantri Poshan Abhiyan funds by the Principal and other officials.
NHRC observed that, if the allegations are true, the allegations raise serious issues of human rights violation. NHRC issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary, asking for a detailed report within two weeks.
