What happened: Amit Shah urges expeditious settlement of pending water issues in the South
Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged expeditious resolution of pending water-related issues involving southern states at the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting in Mamallapuram near Chennai.
Amit Shah stated that protecting a state’s own interests is legitimate. He also argued that water-sharing disputes become problematic when they deprive other states of water for years.
Amit Shah suggested a long-term approach based on river linking, including river-linking proposals connecting major rivers from the Brahmaputra to the Cauvery and the Godavari to help prevent water shortages over the long term.
Southern states agreed to resolve disputes through mutual dialogue and constructive solutions. The meeting expected coordination involving the Jal Shakti Ministry, the Home Affairs Ministry, the Inter-State Council, and the respective state governments.
