What happened: 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting in Tamil Nadu
Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to chair the 31st meeting of the Southern Zonal Council in Tamil Nadu. The meeting is planned for Thursday (20 August 2026) and will be held at a private hotel near Mamallapuram, about 40 km south of Chennai. The meeting is expected to run for roughly four hours, starting around 10 a.m..
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will serve as vice-chairman of the meeting. Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Chennai on Wednesday evening, ahead of the zonal council meeting.
The Inter-State Council Secretariat under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs is organising the meeting. Tamil Nadu is acting as host.
The Southern Zonal Council meeting includes: chief ministers of the member States, lieutenant governors/administrators of member Union territories, and two other ministers from each State.
