What happened
Sarvesh Kushare cleared 2.31 metres at the National Inter-State Athletics Meet in Bhubaneswar and broke Tejaswin Shankar’s eight-year-old Indian men’s high-jump record of 2.28 metres.
The performance made Kushare the world’s joint fourth-best performer of the season at that point and the top Asian jumper. Kushare said he now aims for a medal at the Asian Games.
Background and earlier position
Kushare had earlier come close to the national record with a 2.28-metre effort in Ranchi. The record attempt therefore reflected sustained progression, not a sudden outlier.
Kushare’s coach, Jithin Thomas, said the key change was better control of pressure and a more disciplined run-up. Kushare now builds speed gradually instead of accelerating too early, which helps him take off more smoothly.
