What happened now: Mettur (Stanley Reservoir) release for Cauvery delta irrigation
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will release water from the Stanley Reservoir in Mettur on September 1 for irrigation in the Cauvery delta. Tamil Nadu’s Water Resources Minister N. Anand stated that the water release will continue for 45 days.
Background: stated reasons behind the timing
N. Anand said Tamil Nadu planned the release by balancing drinking water requirements in Tamil Nadu and irrigation needs in the Cauvery delta. N. Anand also cited inadequate rainfall in the Cauvery basin during the southwest monsoon, which increases dependence on reservoir-based irrigation planning.
On dispute-governance measures for Cauvery water allocation, N. Anand claimed that Tamil Nadu took legal and administrative measures. N. Anand said Tamil Nadu presented Tamil Nadu’s position before the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee and the Cauvery Water Management Authority.
N. Anand further said Tamil Nadu approached the Supreme Court and obtained orders aimed at ensuring Tamil Nadu receives its due share of Cauvery water.
