What happened at Malda Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal

West Bengal Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee confirmed concern after 10 infants died at Malda Medical College and Hospital on August 12. The West Bengal Health Department requested a detailed report from the hospital.

Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee said hospital authorities were asked to explain why the deaths occurred and what caused them. Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee also stated that Malda Medical College and Hospital is “infested with rodents”.

Hospital superintendent’s breakdown and possible causes

Hospital superintendent Prosenjit Bar provided a breakdown of the 10 deaths on August 12. Prosenjit Bar stated that 8 infants were born elsewhere and were referred to Malda Medical College and Hospital, while 2 infants were born within Malda Medical College and Hospital.

Prosenjit Bar cited possible causes and stated that a primary report was sent. Possible causes mentioned by Prosenjit Bar included low birth rate, asphyxia, jaundice, and heart-related diseases.
