What happened: World Breastfeeding Week 2026 across India under POSHAN Abhiyaan
The Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, observed World Breastfeeding Week 2026 from 1st to 7th August across India under the theme “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works”. The Ministry carried the observance forward under POSHAN Abhiyaan through Anganwadi Centres, healthcare institutions, community outreach platforms and digital media across States and Union Territories.
Background and earlier position: breastfeeding guidance during the first 1000 days
The Ministry anchored the campaign in the first 1000 days of a child’s life—from pregnancy, the first six months after birth, and the months up to twenty-four months of age. According to the Ministry, nutrition, care and affection in this window shape brain development, immunity, growth, learning ability and lifelong wellbeing.
The Ministry also highlighted colostrum, the first milk produced after birth, as rich in proteins, minerals, vitamins and antibodies, and described it as the “first vaccine of the infant.”
What changed now: week-long focus on “Golden Hour”, exclusive breastfeeding, and workplace support
