What happened
Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 became India’s first privately developed orbital rocket to place multiple technology-demonstration payloads into low Earth orbit. The mission, named Mission Aagaman, marks a significant private-sector milestone in India’s space launch capability.
The rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre after an earlier delay and completed the major mission milestones. The company said the flight validated the performance of its propulsion, avionics, and guidance, navigation, and control systems under real operating conditions.
Why the launch matters
The mission shows that a private Indian company can develop and fly an orbital launch vehicle, not just build subsystems or test hardware. That matters for small-satellite launches, commercial space services, and the wider ecosystem created by private participation in the Indian space sector.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team by phone and described the launch as a defining moment for India’s space journey. He said private-sector participation will widen frontiers and inspire young people to innovate.
