What happened
Skyroot Aerospace has completed India’s first private orbital rocket launch with Vikram-1 under Mission Aagaman. The launch matters because it shows that a private Indian company has moved beyond suborbital testing into the far harder orbital-launch category.
Background and earlier position
India’s orbital launches were historically state-funded and led by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The private space sector expanded after reforms beginning in 2020, when the Union government opened parts of the domestic space industry to private firms through IN-SPACe and by allowing private companies to build rockets and use ISRO infrastructure.
What changed now
Mission Aagaman is developmental, not commercial. Its purpose is to validate stage separation, propulsion, guidance and navigation, structural performance, avionics, fairing deployment, upper-stage separation, and orbital insertion. The launch therefore tests whether Skyroot can move from engineering achievement to a dependable launch service.
