What happened

Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal said the INDIA bloc and other Opposition parties will resist any attempt in Parliament to alter the constitutional balance or weaken federalism. He said the expected return of the delimitation Bill in the Monsoon Session will not change the Opposition’s stance, even if the Bharatiya Janata Party seeks a two-thirds majority for constitutional changes.

Venugopal also said the government should first call an all-party meeting and explain its intent. He argued that public confidence in the BJP and its leadership is declining.

The delimitation question matters because it is linked to how parliamentary and assembly constituencies are redrawn and, therefore, to political representation. Venugopal said the Opposition has already treated delimitation as a national and constitutional issue rather than a Congress-only issue. He also said recent party defections and changes in seating arrangements in a House do not weaken the Opposition’s broader political position.
