What happened: Adhikari’s security assurance for Taslima Nasrin during her return to Kolkata
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari assured exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin of her safety in West Bengal during her return to Kolkata after 19 years. Adhikari made the assurance at an event in Kolkata’s Rabindra Sadan marking Nasrin’s return to the city.
Adhikari said that threats against Nasrin are over. Adhikari also invited Taslima Nasrin to visit whenever she wished and stated that Nasrin’s safety would be his responsibility.
The event included the attendance of veteran BJP leader and former Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy. Taslima Nasrin, in her response, connected her return to her right to speak about women’s liberty and to freedom of speech, and she expressed gratitude for government facilitation rather than for any political party.
