What happened
Bangladesh urged India to expedite the extradition of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Bangladesh raised the demand while discussing India–Bangladesh bilateral issues with Indian diplomatic officials in Dhaka after Sheikh Hasina took refuge in India following her deposition in 2024.
Bangladesh raised the extradition issue during a meeting between India’s High Commissioner in Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi, and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on a Monday amid heightened bilateral tensions. Bangladesh’s foreign minister said the exchange was “somewhat reassuring.”
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized creating a favorable environment to advance India–Bangladesh relations. Along with the Sheikh Hasina extradition request, Bangladesh also reiterated a request for India to extradite people believed to be linked to the killing of Shaheed Osman Hadi in December 2025.
After the meeting, Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said Sheikh Hasina’s Aug. 5 statements undermined Bangladesh’s justice system and expressed the hope that India would take the matter seriously. The Indian mission said both sides discussed matters of mutual interest using a people-centered approach. Diplomatic sources in New Delhi described the exchange as positive and noted that Dhaka hosted a high-level Indian security delegation.
