What happened: Sheikh Hasina’s December return plan and fear of arrest, imprisonment, or death

Bangladesh’s fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she intends to return to Bangladesh by December despite fearing for her life. Sheikh Hasina said she might be killed, arrested, or imprisoned if she returns to Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina linked her decision to public calls for her return by supporters and “people.” Sheikh Hasina also said she is living in a secret location in India and that there is no pressure for her to return.

Background and earlier position: August 2024 ouster, departure to India, and Dhaka court conviction

In November, a Dhaka court convicted Sheikh Hasina of crimes against humanity and sentenced her to be hanged. Sheikh Hasina described the conviction as “political vengeance dressed as law.”
