A protest on the Manubolu National Highway in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, followed allegations of a custodial death and forced police deployment to clear a road blockade. The same source also reports a fatal workplace accident inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, where workers demanded compensation and stronger safety safeguards.
What happened in Nellore
Family members of Yedukondalu placed his body on a truck and blocked the highway outside a police station. YSR Congress Party leaders joined the protest and alleged that a police sub-inspector and a constable beat and tortured Yedukondalu in custody. Police later deployed hundreds of personnel to clear the highway, and the protest ended after police promised justice.
What happened in the Silkyara tunnel
A labourer identified as Naresh Ganjhu, originally from Jharkhand, died after a portion of a concrete protective layer collapsed during construction inside the Silkyara tunnel. According to the Uttarkashi District Emergency Operation Centre, citing National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the accident occurred at around 2 a.m. on Thursday, about 900 metres inside the tunnel from the Barkot end.
The collapse happened during installation work and struck Ganjhu, who was reportedly working as a welder. He suffered critical injuries, was taken to a hospital, and was declared dead by doctors. Officials said the company informed the worker’s family and that a post-mortem would be conducted after the family’s arrival.
