Punjab Police arrested Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra in a case linked to allegations in a United States federal indictment. The case is important because it combines police accountability, extortion through organised crime, and cross-border law-enforcement cooperation.
What happened
A senior police officer confirmed the arrest of Nagra, who had been posted as station house officer at Tanda police station in Hoshiarpur district. Punjab Police had earlier shifted him to police lines after media reports and social media posts linked him to the allegations, and a fact-finding inquiry was ordered.
The action followed an announcement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office of a coordinated international crackdown, codenamed Operation Hard Ball, against India-based transnational organised crime groups.
What the U.S. indictment alleged
The indictment alleged that the syndicate was operated from an Indian jail by gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria. It also alleged that Nagra, described as a Punjab Police officer, tried to implicate a U.S.-based family in a false murder case in India.
