Police in Gurugram said they intercepted an alleged planned attack on businessman Vishal Berry on 9 July in Sushant Lok Phase-I. The encounter is significant because it links a reported ₹5 crore extortion call, organised gang activity, and urban policing in a high-security residential area.

According to the police account, the gang was acting on orders from Deepak Nandal, described as a music-director-turned-gangster allegedly operating extortion from abroad. Police also said they had intelligence about a planned hit, tracked a black SUV with taped number plates, and moved in when armed men arrived.

The police said the suspects fired first and officers returned fire. Four alleged shooters were killed and three policemen were injured. A fifth suspect was critically injured. The police also said the ages of two of the dead were still being verified.

The UPSC angle · GS2 · GS3

UPSC can use the Gurugram encounter to test internal security concepts such as organised crime, extortion rackets, intelligence-led policing, use of technology by gangs, and the accountability issues that arise in alleged police encounters. The case also connects to governance questions on public safety and the capacity of state police to respond to cross-border criminal networks.
