Gurugram police said four alleged gang members were shot dead and one was critically injured in an exchange of fire during an operation on Thursday night. Three police personnel were also wounded. The case is relevant for UPSC because it combines organised crime, extortion, urban policing, and the legality of armed encounters.
What happened
Police said the group was linked to Deepak Nandal, described as a criminal allegedly operating from abroad. Investigators said the gang intended to attack the home of businessman Vishal Berry, who had allegedly received extortion calls from Nandal.
According to police, intelligence about an impending attack led to cordon deployment in Block ‘A’, Sushant Lok Phase-I. The FIR states that a vehicle entered the area with black tape across its number plates and five unidentified youths inside. The vehicle stopped in front of Berry’s residence, and three men came out from the middle row and one from the front row.
Police said the men began firing indiscriminately towards Berry’s house and neighbouring homes. One person was allegedly recording the incident on video. When the accused opened fire after being challenged, police retaliated. Police stated that more than 50 rounds were fired.
Police said all five shooters sustained gunshot injuries. Four were declared dead and one remained under treatment. Three police personnel were injured in the exchange of fire.
