A study by Bodoland University in Raimona National Park, Assam, has shown that some invasive plant species can also support butterfly conservation. The finding matters because it adds a practical management question to the usual invasive-species debate: complete removal of all invasive plants may not always be the best short-term option inside protected landscapes.
What the study found
Researchers documented a rich butterfly and plant interaction network in Raimona National Park. The study recorded 220 butterfly species, 56 larval host plants, and 41 nectar plants.
The researchers found that Lantana camara, Chromolaena odorata, and Ziziphus mauritiana were important nectar sources. These plants became especially useful when native flowers were scarce.
The study also reported seasonal use of invasive plants by butterflies. Lantana camara attracted more than 30 butterfly species from April to October, while Chromolaena odorata supported 24 species from December to February.
The researchers additionally identified many invasive species as larval host plants. That finding is important because butterfly conservation depends not only on adult nectar sources but also on plants where larvae feed and develop.
