What happened
India has flagged off its first hydrogen-powered passenger train, which operates on the Jind-Sonipat stretch in Haryana. The train is designed as a clean-transport demonstration for Indian Railways and as a pilot for future hydrogen rail deployment.
How the train works
UPSC may use India’s hydrogen train to test understanding of fuel-cell technology, hydrogen production and storage, safety design, and the policy link between clean mobility, the Green Hydrogen Mission, and net-zero goals. A mains answer can also assess whether hydrogen rail is a niche innovation or a scalable option for select routes such as heritage lines.
