India is scheduled to get its first hydrogen-powered fuel cell passenger train on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana. The train, called NaMo Green Rail in the official release, is the most testable part of a larger infrastructure package covering rail, highways, and healthcare projects in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab.
The same visit includes projects worth more than ₹25,000 crore. The package spans rail connectivity, road corridors, medical colleges, and tertiary healthcare facilities. For UPSC preparation, the hydrogen train matters more than the ceremony because it connects science and technology with green mobility and rail decarbonisation.
What happened
The Prime Minister is scheduled to flag off NaMo Green Rail, described in the official communication as India’s first hydrogen-powered fuel cell passenger train. The train is planned for operation on the Jind–Sonipat route.
The official release says the train has an indigenous design and generates onboard electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and atmospheric oxygen. The by-product is water vapour.
