What happened: Indian Railways flags off a hydrogen fuel cell train on the Jind–Sonipat route
Indian Railways flagged off India’s first hydrogen fuel cell train on 17 July 2026 between Jind and Sonipat, near the Delhi area. The government communication reports that the train has travelled over 1,200 kilometres so far and delivered diesel savings of more than 3,200 litres.
Indian Railways describes the hydrogen fuel cell train as generating electricity onboard through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The reported by-product is water vapour.
