What happened
Southern states have announced a standing inter-state coordination mechanism for anti-drug surveillance. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, along with the Union Territory of Puducherry, will use the mechanism for continuous intelligence-sharing and joint operations against narcotics trafficking.
The announcement followed a high-level meeting in Thiruvananthapuram of senior police officials from the southern states and representatives of central enforcement agencies. The meeting was held in connection with Kerala’s anti-drugs drive, Operation Tofan.
How the mechanism will work
Each participating state and central agencies such as the Narcotics Control Bureau, Customs and the Intelligence Bureau will appoint senior nodal officers. The stated purpose is to create a standing arrangement for faster information flow, coordinated surveillance and joint enforcement action.
