What happened

Kannada organisations in Bengaluru announced a State bandh on 13 August to protest a Cauvery water release directive. The immediate trigger was the CWMA upholding an earlier requirement of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC).

The CWRC requirement asked Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of Cauvery water for 15 days to Tamil Nadu. Karnataka’s reported position is that poor storage in Karnataka’s reservoirs affects the ability to release water as ordered.

The bandh decision was made at a meeting led by veteran leader and former MLA Vatal Nagaraj.

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar urged organisers not to proceed with the bandh. Shivakumar said Karnataka will consult legal experts and the Opposition at an all-party meeting on Sunday before deciding the next step. Shivakumar also appealed to Tamil Nadu leader C. Joseph Vijay to postpone an upcoming visit to Karnataka.
