What happened
The Supreme Court criticised the Maharashtra government for routinely opposing bail while not ensuring timely criminal trials. In a bail appeal involving a foreign national accused in a murder and rioting case, the Court noted that the accused had spent over four years in custody and that only two of 45 prosecution witnesses had been examined.
The Bench refused bail for the time being, asked the State to file a detailed affidavit explaining the delay and the steps it would take to prevent such pendency, and fixed the next hearing for July 24.
