What happened
Legal experts have argued that a proposed standalone artificial intelligence law in India should not be confined to existing artificial intelligence applications. The proposed framework should also address agentic artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and other harmful automated outputs, because artificial intelligence systems are becoming more autonomous and harder to regulate through older laws alone.
The Ministry is examining a dedicated legal framework for artificial intelligence regulation. The policy goal is to create rules tailored to the technology rather than stretching older statutes beyond their purpose.
UPSC can frame the issue as a governance question on how India should regulate artificial intelligence without suppressing innovation, and how liability, accountability, and risk control should be designed for autonomous systems such as agentic artificial intelligence and deepfakes.
