What happened: Vijay’s outreach to Karnataka on Cauvery water release
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay initiated talks with Karnataka regarding the Cauvery water dispute. The initiative is described as a change in approach because Tamil Nadu has traditionally preferred adjudication (tribunal- and court-based resolution) rather than negotiations between political leaders.
Tamil Nadu seeks Karnataka’s release of Tamil Nadu’s allotted share under the final Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award (2007), as amended by the Supreme Court.
The outreach is placed against a monsoon-related shortfall. Between June 1 and July 23, Tamil Nadu expected roughly 32 tmc ft but received only about 3.5 tmc ft. Tamil Nadu’s position in the analysis is that proportionate reduction should still have left Tamil Nadu needing at least an additional 3 tmc ft during the same period, given deficient southwest monsoon rainfall and Tamil Nadu’s proportionate reduction formula.
