What happened (questioning after FIR over 4 August protests)
Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) police questioned People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti at Kothibagh police station in Srinagar for around two hours. The questioning followed the lodging of a First Information Report (FIR) against the PDP and its leaders.
The FIR was lodged after street protests on 4 August. The protests were connected to the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 on 5 August. The FIR reportedly mentioned Mehbooba Mufti and Iltija Mufti.
Before Iltija Mufti’s questioning, Mehbooba Mufti addressed PDP cadre and alleged that the FIR and police action were intended to silence the PDP. Mehbooba Mufti also complained about an alleged incident during detention, where a male constable was allegedly directed to drag Iltija Mufti. Mehbooba Mufti said a police officer should not touch a woman by the neck.
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the arrest as a “fixed match,” implying that the arrest was pre-arranged rather than driven only by immediate law-and-order needs.
