What happened in Parliament
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju rejected Opposition demands that Home Minister Amit Shah respond in Parliament on allegations of police excesses linked to student protests against the NEET paper leak.
Rijiju stated that the government, in consultation with the Chair (the presiding officer of the House), determines which minister answers and the timing of replies. Rijiju also said Opposition members cannot dictate the minister or the reply schedule.
In the Lok Sabha, Congress leader K.C. Venugopal protested with placards claiming that Amit Shah was absent. Rijiju replied that Amit Shah attends daily and stays late.
In the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge reiterated the demand during Zero Hour. Rijiju accused Kharge of misleading the House.
During the Monsoon session beginning July 20, parliamentary business ran into disruptions. Question Hour was washed out; Zero Hour was short; and the Lok Sabha passed the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026 without debate. Parliamentary committee papers were tabled, and both Houses were scheduled to meet again on Monday.
