Assam has reported to the State Assembly that it deported or expelled foreigners between January 2016 and June 2026, while also giving updated figures on people identified as foreigners in the State. The figures matter for UPSC because they connect migration control, internal security, and citizenship administration in one long-running governance issue.
What happened now
The Assam government told the Assembly that 2,089 foreigners were deported or expelled between January 2016 and June 2026 for illegal entry or illegal stay. The State said most of those removed were Bangladeshi nationals, while smaller numbers came from Myanmar, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Russia, Ukraine, Kenya, Pakistan and Uganda.
In a separate reply, the government said 1,72,673 people had been identified as foreigners in Assam up to 31 May 2026. The same reply gave a religion-wise breakup of those identified: 1,11,414 Muslims, 61,189 Hindus and 70 Christians.
The minister also said 1,572 illegal foreigners were sent back from 2025 to 30 June 2026, and 117 were expelled during the same period.
