What happened

The Gujarat High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of a lawyer’s complaint and turned it into a public interest case over allegations that police in Surat flogged and publicly paraded handcuffed accused persons. The complaint refers to a July 14 video in which a deputy commissioner of police and other officers were allegedly seen assaulting and humiliating detainees in public.
