What happened
Heavy rain in south Gujarat led to a major rescue-and-relief response, with authorities reporting around 1,200 people rescued and hundreds more moved to safer places. One rain-related death was reported from Tapi district, and floodwater disrupted roads, transport, and essential services across several districts.
The India Meteorological Department issued red alerts for Valsad, Navsari, Dang, Surat, and Tapi for Thursday and Friday, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Valsad was identified as the worst-hit district in State Emergency Operation Centre data.
Response and operational background
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reviewed the situation, and the Union government assured support for relief operations. The National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Indian Air Force, and Coast Guard were placed on alert as rescue work intensified.
In Surat, fire department personnel used boats to evacuate residents trapped in flooded areas. In Ahmedabad, rainwater flooded residential societies and forced the closure of several underpasses, adding to traffic disruption.
