Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has said that reported maternal deaths in Rajasthan are a sign of a worsening public health crisis. He described the rising fatalities as “frightening and shocking” and urged the Centre to take the issue seriously.

The reported deaths are linked to surgery in the obstetrics and gynaecology departments of two government hospitals in Bhilwara and Banswara districts.

Key facts stated in the release

The release says that eight women and a minor died over the past week after surgery in the two hospitals.

Gehlot also said that after four deaths in Banswara, reports of 18 deaths over two months have emerged.
