What happened
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said judicial infrastructure is no longer a luxury but a necessity. At the inauguration of the Tower of Justice, a seven-acre judicial complex for the Gurugram District and Sessions Court near Rajiv Chowk, he called for mandatory women-centric amenities in all new court complexes.
The Chief Justice of India specifically asked for separate Bar rooms for women advocates and an adjoining childcare facility. He also said a justice consumer should receive basic amenities such as seating, drinking water, and washrooms.
Background and earlier position
The Chief Justice of India recalled performing the bhoomi puja in January 2017 as head of the building committee and described the inauguration day as historic. He also pointed to the rise in legal disputes linked to Gurugram’s shift from an agricultural town to an industrial hub.
A Supreme Court Bar Association survey was cited to show that many judicial complexes across States still lack basic facilities for women. The Chief Justice of India said it is not appropriate to describe a court complex as modern if it does not provide such amenities.
