What happened: MV AMIR1 and the safety call for Indian seafarers
The Indian Embassy in Ukraine stated that the safety and security of Indian seafarers aboard the merchant vessel MV AMIR1 in the Black Sea is being treated as its “highest priority”. The Embassy also said it is in constant touch with concerned parties to ensure safety and security.
The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) made an urgent appeal describing conditions around MV AMIR1 as “life-threatening”. FSUI’s claims included the following:
FSUI stated that 13 Indian sailors were among 15 crew members aboard MV AMIR1.FSUI alleged repeated drone and missile attacks near the vessel.FSUI said the crew feared a direct hit.FSUI urged authorities, ship owners, and relevant governments to secure safety and arrange prompt repatriation.FSUI warned that Indian seafarers must not be left as targets in conflict zones.
Background and earlier position: India’s seafarer advisory linked to attacks on civilian shipping
India had issued a seafarer advisory on 26 July. The advisory was linked to frequent attacks on civilian merchant vessels in the Black Sea and nearby regions, which have become part of the maritime front of the Russia–Ukraine conflict.
