Kerala’s Wayanad disaster shows more than “weather”: it is also a failure of planning, compliance and disaster management
A landslide at the entrance of a Wayanad twin-tunnel road project has renewed scrutiny of environmental clearance, slope stability and disaster preparedness in Kerala.
What happened
On July 7, a landslide/debris slide in Wayanad district struck the entrance area of an under-construction twin-tunnel road project at Kalladi near Meppadi panchayat, close to Chooralmala. The editorial says six workers were reported dead. It treats the event as more than a weather disaster and links it to the risks of building major infrastructure in fragile hill terrain.
