What happened: Supreme Court directs Madhya Pradesh to consider alternate land for Friday prayers
The Supreme Court directed the Government of Madhya Pradesh to engage with the Muslim side and consider allotting an alternate piece of land near a dargah area adjacent to the disputed Bhojshala–Kamal Maula mosque complex, so that Friday prayers can be offered.
The Supreme Court linked the direction to the constitutional duty of the State, stating that the State’s responsibilities include maintaining law and order and enabling communities to perform religious rites.
The Supreme Court also clarified that the Government of Madhya Pradesh can propose alternate, better-located land if such land is acceptable to the petitioners.
During proceedings, the Government of Madhya Pradesh stated that it was seeking an amicable arrangement rather than adjudicating competing rights.
The Supreme Court considered a claim that the currently allotted land is about 1.3 km away from the disputed Bhojshala–Kamal Maula complex.
