Nomination filings began for byelections to three Assembly seats in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. The seats will go to the polls on July 30, and counting is scheduled for August 3.
The three vacancies arose for different reasons, which makes the byelections relevant to the law on legislative membership, disqualification, and representation. The seats are Bankipur in Bihar, Datia in Madhya Pradesh and Manjalpur in Gujarat.
What happened in each seat
In Bankipur, the Bharatiya Janata Party's Neeraj Kumar Sinha and Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor filed nominations. The seat fell vacant after Nitin Nabin moved to the Rajya Sabha.
In Datia, the Bharatiya Janata Party nominee Ashutosh Tiwari and the Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh filed their papers. The seat became vacant after Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti lost membership following conviction in a cheating case.
In Manjalpur, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Satish Patel and Congress candidate Bhikhabhai Rabari filed nominations. The vacancy arose after the death of minister Yogesh Patel.
