SC rejects professor’s anticipatory bail plea in suicide case

The Supreme Court refused anticipatory bail to M.K. Ram, former head of the Department of Dental Anatomy at Anjarakandy Dental College in Kerala, in a case linked to the death of first-year BDS student Nithin Raj. The Court said the alleged conduct toward students was inhuman and required stern treatment.
The student was found dead on campus on 10 April in a suspected suicide. The family and students alleged harassment by Ram and another faculty member, Sangeetha Nambiar.
The communication also carried a distress helpline reference to Tele MANAS at 14416.
UPSC may test the legal threshold for anticipatory bail, the role of courts in safeguarding vulnerable students, and the ethical responsibility of educational institutions in preventing harassment and distress.
