The United Kingdom has reshuffled its cabinet under Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The most notable change for India watchers is the appointment of former Labour leader Ed Miliband as Foreign Secretary, alongside the elevation of India-born MP Kanishka Narayan as AI Minister.
The reshuffle is relevant because ministerial changes can affect foreign-policy emphasis, trade negotiations, and technology regulation. India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar publicly congratulated Ed Miliband and pointed to recent momentum in India-United Kingdom ties, including the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement.

Ed Miliband, previously Energy Minister, was moved to the Foreign Secretary post. Shabana Mahmood remained Home Secretary. Yvette Cooper was made Health Secretary. John Healey was moved to Chancellor of the Exchequer. Miatta Fahnbulleh became Energy Secretary, and Alex Norris took over as Justice Secretary.
