What happened: “Bharti Vyavastha Sudhar Yatra” launched in Jharkhand

Devendra Nath Mahto, leader of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha, launched the statewide march called “Bharti Vyavastha Sudhar Yatra”. Mahto’s stated aim is to demand reforms in government recruitment examinations so that hiring for government jobs remains fair and corruption-free.

Mahto began the yatra from Nemra village in the Ramgarh district. Nemra village is described as the birthplace of Shibu Soren. Mahto started the yatra after garlanding a statue of Shibu Soren, who is described as a co-founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and a former chief minister.

During the yatra launch, residents of Nemra blocked a road to protest alleged plans to burn the effigy of Chief Minister Hemant Soren. After the launch, Mahto’s group did not proceed toward Shibu Soren’s ancestral house.

Background and earlier position: student protest, state cancellations, and investigation orders

The statewide march follows a 26-day student protest that began on 25 July in Ranchi. The student protest alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations.
